Paimio Sanatorium / Square Colosseums
The clay and resin reproductions of two iconic architectural landmarks—the "Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana" (commonly known as the Square Colosseum) by Giovanni Guerrini in the EUR district of Rome, and the Paimio Sanatorium by Alvar Aalto in Finland—have been meticulously crafted for Anna Fendi, owner of FENDI, and the Paimio Sanatorium Foundation.
The ceramic model of the Square Colosseum (15x15x15 cm) echoes the materiality of the original marble structure in Rome, transforming its essence into a tactile, natural ceramic medium that evokes elegance and sophistication. The resin model (10x10x10 cm), on the other hand, captures the architectural details with precision. Initially modeled digitally in 3D, the resin structure was printed in segments, with its external form and internal planes carefully crafted and assembled individually.
The Paimio Sanatorium model, designed at a 1:300 scale, deconstructs the renowned design by Alvar Aalto—created over 90 years ago—into detailed, segmented parts. Commissioned by the Paimio Sanatorium Foundation, the model serves as both a fundraising tool and a visual showcase for potential investors. It has been displayed at the Sanatorium itself and at the Finnish Consulate in New York, illustrating the historical and architectural significance of the building while supporting its preservation and future development.
